130: Night Run

It was a cold morning in March, my phone kept beeping insistently on my desk while the flashlight kept blinking towards the ceiling of my room. I would soon get up from my bed, feeling sluggish as I walked to the desk; A quick glance at my phone screen showed that it was already 5:00 am.

I watched the day on the screen with a gentle smile on my face and knew it was my birthday… I didn’t expect to wake up to a pile of presents under my bed, let alone a party or a chocolate cake on the table. But while I was washing my face at the sink, I took another look at the phone…surely there were lots of happy birthday wishes from friends and family and…€50 from my old man.

Early enough; I had breakfast and went back to my room to collect my backpack with some food and ice cold water. There was also the selfie stick and a small power bank for my cell phone; After completing my checklist, I grabbed my car keys and headed to the garage. It didn’t take long before my friends already sent me the meeting point, which I had to reach quickly.

Where did I go so early in the morning? Right on the way to a mountain rally deep in the mountains, at least an hour from home. I knew full well that I had an hour’s drive ahead of me, but I was also under pressure to get to where I wanted to be before the streets surrounding the event were closed to traffic, so I immediately set about doing that Warm up the engine.

“Remember me-Leslie Parrish” That was the song that played on the radio while the glow plugs did their work. Soon my car awoke from its peaceful sleep with a loud groan. I saw the brief cloud of smoke coming from the exhaust as I slowly backed out of the garage. I knew full well it was a cold start, but… right now I had one more stop to make before I got to the meeting point.

I soon locked the garage door behind me and left the house with the engine humming at full throttle. It was only a short drive to the gas station, but I knew I had to stop for some snacks and water… I also put some diesel in my tank, some air in the tires… and took advantage of the opportunity for a quick cumshot just in case. We took photos at the meeting point.

Soon I would admire my car, how its black paint glowed in the dark against the bright red and dark blue neon lights of the gas station. But knowing I had about 100km and an hour’s drive ahead of me… I soon got back in the car and headed for the highway, determined to get to the meeting point as quickly as possible.

It was a relaxing ride to say the least; An empty highway with no traffic, Mcfly-The End playing from the speakers… I felt comfortable in my seat while the 1.9 hummed quietly under the hood, inviting me to just keep driving in the middle lane. Often 1-2 trucks would appear in the slow lane and I could easily overtake them.

Kilometers of straight stretches that seemed to stretch to the horizon, a road that would soon be empty of traffic… Then the music seemed to encourage me to give in, it was safe enough to do it at that hour of the morning and at that time On one particular day… the burning question in my head was screaming to be answered full speed ahead.

And so… I gave in to temptation, knowing there were no speed cameras in my path, the needles rising faster and faster as the 1.9 liter under the hood growled angrily and eagerly, the turbo the next gear change initiated as the engine began to run. At the limit the humming got louder… I was pressed hard against the seat for a moment and felt a small twinge of fear as I approached the red line, but then… I felt it a strange, calming trance took over my frightened body.

For some reason I still didn’t know, the other vehicles seemed to stand still as I passed them. I couldn’t bring myself to take my foot off the pedal as the engine continued to push forward, seemingly unfazed by the wall of air in front of it. When I dared to look at the dashboard again… I smiled because I felt like this burning question had finally been answered once and for all.

45 minutes… that was all it took for me to reach the meeting point, I soon slowed down and heard the loud hum under the hood slowly getting quieter. My view changed from an empty highway with no traffic and empty fields on either side… to country roads, trucks, cars and houses… which would soon become busy and labyrinthine city streets that yawned as I woke up.

Soon my car slowly rolled into the gas station as if it hadn’t been at full throttle just a few minutes ago. As I put the handbrake on and let the car idle and cool down, I couldn’t help the smile on my face as I looked at my phone again, texted back and explained that I had arrived first at the meeting point .

There were responses that expressed surprise and disbelief… Some even expressed surprise at how early I was, my friends were still at home reading the morning paper and sipping their coffee while I was lost in a trance earlier… In the moment I had I had enough of killing time until they caught up with me and stuff… I finally turned off the engine to have a quick cold Coke at the bar in the building.

Would my adventure end here? I knew full well that the day had just begun.
