  • Boulder police arrested a woman after she allegedly failed to steal a truck because she was unable to drive a manual transmission vehicle
  • After she failed to get away with the truck, police allege she got out and the vehicle rolled into a fire hydrant
  • The woman is charged with second-degree motor vehicle theft

Enthusiasts often rave about the “joys” of a manual transmission and praise it as the ultimate test of driving skill. But let’s be honest: the real benefit of mastering the third pedal is a little more… glaring.

Sure, there’s the ever-present threat of a zombie apocalypse (because obviously machines are drowning in the wasteland). But a more down-to-earth advantage, as a recent incident in Colorado shows, is that a stick shift can be your best friend when it comes to thwarting thieves.

The Boulder Police Department recently shared a story highlighting both the benefits of learning to drive the stick and the advantage of owning a manual transmission vehicle. The story begins with officers receiving a call about a truck that crashed into a fire hydrant on Friday, May 3rd.

After police arrived at the scene and spoke with witnesses, they arrested a suspect who had just been released from jail after being accused of carjacking the day before. Police allege the woman came across a truck about half a mile down the road and when she looked inside she found the keys.

Seeing an easy opportunity, she reportedly got in and drove off, but quickly realized the heist wouldn’t be that easy. According to police, the woman couldn’t figure out how to drive the vehicle because of the manual transmission. She got out, probably left it in neutral, and the truck rolled into the fire hydrant.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident and the truck was returned to its rightful owner. Police did not say how extensive the damage was to the vehicle and it is not clear how pleased the owner’s insurance company will be when they learn the keys were left inside.

The woman faces charges of second-degree motor vehicle theft with aggravated circumstances, careless driving, driving without a valid license and causing an unattended vehicle or other property to crash.
