Will Smith Opens up About Vanessa Hudgens’ Pregnancy in ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’

Will Smith has nothing but good things to say about his co-star, Vanessa Hudgensincluding not letting her baby bump get in the way of a hard day at work!

Conversation with ET’s Kevin Frazier on Wednesday during a screening of Bad Boys: Ride or Diethe 55-year-old actor remembered working with the expectant mother Fourth part of the beloved Bad Boys franchisein which the 35-year-old actress returned as weapons expert Kelly after her debut in 2020 Bad boys for life.

While filming for drive or die began at the end of March 2023, production was delayed by several months SAG-AFTRA strike 2023which lasted from July to November 2023. As the actors resumed work, Hudgens joined the production with a special guest – her unborn child!

Smith recalls the actress’ difficulty managing the film’s stunts with her growing baby bump, noting that the crew “had to start shooting around it.”

“So there was a strike [and] When she came back and we had to finish the film, that was really it [about] I’m trying to figure out how to shoot around [the bump]” Smith tells ET.

Raving that the Fat Live! Alum is “a hard worker” who “wants to make it,” adding, “I was like, ‘No, don’t worry. You will always be able to tell your child that they were in that scene with you.’ .’”

Hudgens announced her pregnancy in March by revealing her baby bump Oscar Awards 2024 Red carpet.

The High School Musical alum – who is expecting her first child with her husband, a Colorado Rockies player Cole Tuckerpreviously spoke to ET about her return to the Bad Boys franchise next to Smith, Martin LawrenceAlexander Ludwig, Paola Nuñez, Eric Dane, Ioan Gruffudd, Jacob Scipio, Melanie Liburd and Tasha Smith.

“I mean, it’s just such a classic, beloved story and it’s really nice to be able to take this journey with them and let so much time pass by,” she said of the new installment. “We really relied on the fact that they’re a little older and things are changing and they’re not necessarily operating at the speed that they once knew.”

“It’s fun to be here and I think there’s a lot of belly laughs and…” [it’s] “Action-packed,” Hudgens added. “It’s going to be a great movie.”

In the meantime, Smith tells ET that since they’ve expanded on “that,” fans who love the classic banter between Mike and Marcus are in for some new surprises, as well as an overall exciting sequel Bad Boys Universe.”

“We shot this film aggressively and tried to keep it exciting – that’s what we wanted.” [a] “It’s a full popcorn movie, but we wanted it to grow with the characters,” he said of the film. “Don’t try to make the 25-year-old version of the film – no, these guys are making it age-appropriate.”

So Smith jokes that his stunt work this time was “terrible.”

“We had a really, really great stunt team,” he teases. “I still want it to be authentic, so I know how to adapt. You know, I know, ‘Ehh, maybe it’s not a four-kick and a flip and a run and jump over something.’ Maybe we can get the jump out in a few shots.”

Either way, fans can still expect a high-octane film that delivers the thrills they were expecting.

“For me, it has to stand on its own,” Smith says of returning to his Bad Boys Role. “I told myself that I would never do something to the fans, which is to make a sequel just because it would be cool to have a sequel.”

He adds: “This one meets my needs.”

The King Richard Star also shares that the cast and crew have worked hard to give viewers more characters to love (and hate) and a story that works not just as a sequel to the previous three films, but as a complete one own concept.

“There are several scenes where you’ll be rooting for multiple characters,” he says, adding, “It’s Mike and Marcus, just like you love them, but we’ve expanded and there’s more room for more actors and it’s open and, you know, people are awesome.”

Bad Boys: Ride or Die hits theaters June 7th.
