After the tragic death of Princess Diana in August 1997, John F. Kennedy Jr.‘s wife Carolyn Bessette Kennedy tried to get her husband to answer the phone.

According to the new book OOnce Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedyfrom which an excerpt comes People on Thursday, May 16, “Carolyn tried to get John to call Prince William And Harry to offer condolences when it emerged that Diana had hoped her sons would emulate John’s modesty in the face of media obsession.”

However, author Elizabeth Beller explained, John was hesitant because “he didn’t know her and thought her situation was very different.”

“He had met each other [Princess Diana] once or twice,” Beller continues. “And he was aware of the fact that she had died while being chased by paparazzi [he and Carolyn’s] Life became overloaded with attention and he was upset.”
