What is UWB and Which Samsung Galaxy Phones Support It?

UWB is short for Ultra-Wideband, a wireless technology that relies on radio waves to accurately measure the distance between objects. Samsung is offering the radio for the first time on its flagships with the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, and all subsequent models have the function as standard. UWB can be used as a virtual car key for select BMW models, and the technology is at the heart of Samsung’s SmartTag+.

What is Ultra Wideband?

Think of ultra-wideband (UWB) as a turbocharged version of Bluetooth. The Bluetooth LE (Low Energy) standard is not ideal for location detection due to latency, which is typically over 3ms. However, with UWB this is reduced to under 1 ms. UWB also has a range more than three times greater than Bluetooth and can transmit more than 20 times the amount of data.
