The MLB kicked off Opening Day Thursday, and amidst some incredible team and individual performances, the final game between the A’s and Angels in Oakland was the enduring highlight of the first day of the season.
In a rather shocking turn of events, Mike Trout or someone other than Shohei Ohtani shines for the Angels as right fielder Hunter Renfroe makes the 2023 catch of the year with an absurd no-regret catch Set an unbelievably high standard Datani can’t believe it’s on the mound.
Renfroe was turned by Jace Peterson’s deep fly, but turned around somehow and just tossed his glove into perfect position to drag the ball in and out to help maintain a 1-0 lead in the fifth. It can be seen from the side corner that Renfro turned his head completely when he reached out and hit the ball just right to catch it.
Ohtani’s reaction was priceless as the typically stoic MVP threw his hands up in celebration of his teammates saving him from having to deal with a leading double in the 1-0 game. Renfroe plays so well it’s like he absolutely knows where he’s going. Opening Day doesn’t always provide a lasting highlight that will be replayed throughout the season, but I can safely say it will be the standard by which we will measure our incredible catch for the rest of the year.
