The Velvety XM Mystique Allure from BMW Just Wants to Be Cuddled

  • The XM Mystique Allure is BMW’s first fashion-inspired project, created in collaboration with Naomi Campbell.
  • It features an ultramarine blue exterior with a velvet upper body and shimmering sequins on the bottom half, and a full purple velvet interior.
  • The one-off creation also features a unique soundtrack by Hans Zimmer for the electric mode.

BMW has introduced the XM Mystique Allure, a unique version of its flagship SUV equipped with enough velvet to upholster a Hollywood mansion. Inspired by none other than British supermodel Naomi Campbell, this purple chariot is the elaborate result of BMW’s, er, unique Partnership with the Cannes Film Festival.

The exterior of the BMW XM Mystique Allure is presented in a deeply saturated ultramarine blue, Naomi Campbell’s favorite shade. The upper body is draped in velvet, pretentious yet plush, while the lower half sparkles with frozen metal sequins – a nod to excess. As the colors shift from intense purple to deep ultramarine, the effect is undeniably striking, even if we wonder how it will ever survive a car wash encounter.

Not surprisingly, the XM’s interior is also upholstered in purple velvet, from the seats to the door panels to the illuminated roof. Additionally, Hans Zimmer, who collaborated with BMW for the soundscapes of its electrified fleet, has composed a unique soundtrack for the plug-in hybrid SUV’s zero-emissions mod.

Predictably, the BMW XM Mystique Allure uses the most powerful version of the label’s plug-in hybrid powertrain. The setup includes a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 and a single electric motor, which together produce 738 hp (550 kW / 748 hp) and 1,000 Nm (737.6 lb-ft) of torque.

BMW has branded the vehicle as a “Haute Couture” creation, a term usually reserved for bespoke haute couture. While other luxury automakers like Maybach have ventured into similar bespoke projects, the XM seems more suited to the car show than everyday driveways.

In addition to the world premiere of its first fashion-inspired model, BMW will also present itself at the 77th Cannes Film Festival as a provider of over 200 vehicles for shuttle services. This fleet includes the fully electric BMW models i5 and i7 as well as the plug-in hybrid XM.
