The Lord of the Rings Team Reveals the Plot and Characters for The Hunt for Gollum.

When the news broke that Warner Bros. was producing a new Lord of the rings Movie about GollumDirected by Gollum himself, Andy Serkis, and produced by Peter Jackson, Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh, we immediately wanted someone to do it think about it. Why come back? Why this story? Who will return? Well, someone has.

deadline sat down with Jackson, Serkis and Boyens to discuss everything The Hunt for Gollum and the interview is full of tantalizing teases. For example, the website calls the Gollum movie “the first of two new films,” not even counting this year’s anime. The War of the Rohirrim. That is interesting. Jackson also talked about why this story is the one that will be told first.

“The Gollum/Sméagol character has always fascinated me because Gollum reflects the worst of human nature, while his Sméagol side is arguably quite sympathetic,” Jackson said. “I think it appeals to readers and film audiences alike, because there’s a little bit of both in all of us. We really want to explore his backstory and delve into the parts of his journey that we didn’t have time to explore in the earlier films. It is too early to know who will cross his path, but suffice it to say that we will take our cue from Professor Tolkien.”

Serkis also teased that Gollum would likely cross paths with recognizable characters, but didn’t want to commit to that. “That’s a difficult question to answer at this point because we’re still in the early stages of what exactly we’re doing and where the story is going to take us,” Serkis said. “That’s why I don’t want to commit to anything at the moment. I mean, because it’s so raw and flailing and we literally just have very early script discussions and ideas about exactly where and how we’re going to connect with the character and her journey and how she’ll connect with her or is other characters and the characters we know and don’t know. However, I don’t want to say anything at this point that could commit us, because literally everything is up for grabs.”

The interview also goes into depth about how this film will stand out from the others. A lot of this has to do with the fact that performance tracking has progressed since then Lord of the rings-but it’s also because Serkis, not Jackson, is directing. “You can’t imagine anyone else who knows what this character is capable of, and we know what he brings to her and the entire world of Middle-earth,” Boyens said. “Andy will have a really interesting attitude. It will be his own opinion because we don’t want this film to be just the fourth film in the trilogy. This film has to work in its own way. And that is our task. We have to be able to do that. I know there are a lot of people out there asking, “Oh no, why are they doing this?” Why are they going back in? Well, that’s our job. Our job will be to prove why we think it’s a good idea.”
