Tesla Cybertruck Outsold Rivian 2 to 1 in March, but Ford F-150 Lightning Crushes Them Both Together

  • The Ford F-150 outperformed all-electric trucks in registrations by at least double, if not more, in March.
  • The Tesla Cybertruck secured second place with twice as many registrations as the Rivian R1T.
  • All three beat both the GMC Hummer EV and the Chevrolet Silverado EV by a wide margin

The Ford F-150 has been the undisputed heavyweight champ among pickup trucks for so long that it has practically grown a chrome beard. Now the F-150 Lightning is well on its way to becoming the EV equivalent: a familiar silhouette that outperforms the competition with a combination of affordability, accessibility and… well, maybe a little less visual eccentricity.

In March, it significantly outperformed Tesla’s Cybertruck and Rivian’s R1T, outselling both combined.

The F-150 Lightning recorded 2,893 registrations in March, nearly tripling its number from the same month in 2022, according to data from S&P Global. While it lacks the Cybertruck’s flamboyant design, that is also likely a factor in its popularity. Speaking of Tesla with a panel body: Despite its unconventional appearance, it surprisingly overtook every other electric truck in terms of registration figures in March.

In total, data reported by AutoNews shows 1,158 new Cybertruck registrations. “In its fourth month, the Cybertruck had over a thousand registrations and outperformed the R1T by more than two to one,” said Tom Libby, deputy director of industry analysis at S&P Global Mobility. “And to be honest, I’m a little surprised. The Cybertruck is very, very unique and it’s interesting that it was able to achieve this kind of volume so quickly.”

The Rivian R1T took third place with 548 points. The F-150 is clearly popular, but a closer look at the numbers might shed light on why. The Tesla starts with just under six figures. That is a high price that you have to pay regardless of the other market participants. However, a comparison shows that Rivian and Ford buyers can pay less.

The price of the R1T was recently reduced to $71,700 including shipping, while the Lightning starts at $57,090 including shipping. Of course, price isn’t the only factor to consider. The Cybertruck is popular for a variety of reasons, including its novelty. That’s why it’s somewhat surprising that the GMC Hummer EV lags far behind the competition, with just 192 registrations in March. Interestingly, even the Chevrolet Silverado EV surpassed it with 319 registrations.

In particular, some of this data may not be perfect. Tesla doesn’t release U.S. sales data, and Rivian doesn’t reveal how many R1Ts have been sold either.
