T20 World Cup 2024: Usain Bolt Has Special Praise for Virat Kohli

Former sprint world champion Usain Bolt particularly praised none other than Indian batsman Virat Kohli in a recent interview.

Usain Bolt, originally from Jamaica, is the brand ambassador of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 along with legendary names like Chris Gayle and Yuvraj Singh. He has previously mentioned how influential he believes Virat Kohli has been in the sporting world and ahead of the World Cup, he said a few more things about the former Indian captain.

Usain Bolt calls Virat Kohli the greatest cricketer of all time

Speaking to PTI recently, Usain Bolt claimed that despite the bevy of some world-class cricketers, Virat Kohli was, in his opinion, the standout of them all. Today’s star is perhaps the most famous cricketer currently and possibly the most famous cricketer who has ever lived.

If people stay in stadiums in the US and West Indies because of the World Cup, then half the reason will be Virat Kohli. His presence in itself is huge and if non-cricketers appreciate him for what he has done, then one has to realize that Kohli is indeed an international icon. “Kohli is certainly the standout” – Bolt told PTI:

This T20 World Cup for Virat Kohli will be more important than ever. Reports are rife that Kohli, along with captain Rohit Sharma, will opt out of the shortest format after the end of the World Cup. This makes this special edition even more important as Kohli still hopes and strives to win an ICC tournament as a senior player in the team.

The last time he won an ICC trophy, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma were the new opening pair, Dinesh Karthik had just found his mojo back. MS Dhoni was at the peak of his captaincy and England had yet to win a single ICC silverware. The world has turned upside down since then, but Virat Kohli is yet to pick up a major trophy.

Usain Bolt reveals his childhood cricket icons

Before mentioning Virat Kohli as the standout, Usain Bolt had revealed the cricketers he looked up to in his childhood. The eight-time Olympic gold medalist admitted that he always looked up to Wasim Akram growing up simply because of the left-arm seamer’s ability to bowl in-swinging yorkers.

Bolt then named West Indies icons Courtney Walsh and Curtley Ambrose as the other two bowlers he admired. The batting rivalry between Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara was one of his favorite childhood competitions and he admitted that West Indies was the team he supported because of his father.

“Over the years, Wasim Akram was one of my favorite players because he had such a sweeping yorker. Of course, Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose, all these guys that I’ve admired over the years, they were so dominant in their demeanor.”

“Like my father, I always support the West Indies (laughs). But yes, I was also a fan of Sachin Tendulkar. He and Brian Lara were part of my life growing up. It was a great rivalry.” – Usain Bolt concluded.
