T20 World Cup 2024: First Look at New York Pitch Reveals: India’s Four-spinner Plan Backfires

The ninth edition of the T20 World Cup is scheduled to take place from June 1st to 29th in the West Indies and the United States of America (USA). It will be the first time that the United States of America hosts an ICC World Cup tournament.

The T20 World Cup is co-hosted by the United States, with venues in New York, Florida and Dallas. The USA Cricket Association opted for drop-in pitches rather than building one from scratch due to a lack of time and resources.

The match between Pakistan and India is scheduled for June 9 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. A total of eight games will be played in New York, including India’s three games. Installation of the ten playing fields for the games began earlier this month.

The 34,000-seat venue will utilize the infrastructure of the Las Vegas Formula One circuit. The ICC turned a city park into a cricket facility. In addition to the four center goals, six additional playing fields will be installed for team training and practice games during the event.

We can’t say anything about team combinations – Harbhajan Singh

During a press conference organized by Star Sports, former India spinner Harbhajan Singh raised concerns over ‘drop-in pitches’ during the 2024 T20 World Cup. Singh suggested that team combinations should be decided after observing pitch conditions in practice matches.

“Parking spaces there [Nassau Cricket Stadium] Nobody knows that they are honest. Even the pitch curators may not know how many times this pitch will last. How much heat would there be, how much water was filled in? How much bounce would it provide?” Harbhajan said.

“Once these practice games are played there, we will know how the pitch behaves. And then we can think about combinations. “We don’t know anything about team combinations beforehand.” he added.

The upcoming ICC event will feature 20 nations and will take place from June 4th to 30th. The teams are divided into four groups of five teams each. The top two teams in each group advance to the next phase of the tournament.

The eight remaining teams will be divided into two groups of four teams each. The top two teams in each group advance to the semi-finals. The final match of the T20 World Cup will be played in Barbados on June 30.

India will begin their T20 World Cup journey against Ireland on June 5 in New York. The Men in Blue will face Pakistan in their next game. The Rohit Sharma-led team will face USA and Canada in their final two group stage games on June 12 and 15 respectively.
