Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated Chennai Super Kings by 27 runs on Saturday (May 18) to qualify for the playoffs of the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024). They have joined Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the playoffs.

RCB had their backs against the wall because just one win wasn’t enough to make it into the playoffs. They needed to win by at least 18 runs after scoring a total of over 200 to finish the league phase with a better net run rate than CSK. And the Faf du Plessis-led side responded in style, winning their sixth straight game and storming into the playoffs.

RCB had to bat first and ended their innings with 218 for 5. Captain Faf du Plessis led his side from the front and scored the most for RCB with 54 points. Virat Kohli (47), Rajat Patidar (41) and Cameron Green (38*) also struck crucial shots for RCB and helped them post a high total.

CSK had to score at least 201 runs to qualify for the playoffs. However, they ended their innings with 191 for 7 in 20 overs. With 17 runs needed in the final over to qualify, MS Dhoni hit Yash Dayal’s first ball for a six, reducing the tally to 11 for 5. However, the left-arm pacer recovered in style as he hit Dhoni in the very next Passage from the pitch set Ball up before conceding just a single in the next four balls to take RCB into the playoffs.
