Mithun Chakraborty’s rise to fame was not an easy ride, the actor opened up about the challenges he faced in the late ’70s and ’80s during an appearance on Zee Tv’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa in 2023. The disco dancing star revealed how climbing through success wasn’t easy for him as many actresses refused to work with him and considered him a second-rate actor.

He thanked legendary actress Zeenat Aman for working with him Taqdeer which broke the curse and eventually made him a star. “How many daughters can a man give? No other heroine was willing to work with me. They thought I was a “Chota star”. ‘Will he ever become a hero? Who will make him a hero?’ What should you say about me? I don’t even want to say it. Then there is pain.” he said.
“There was a time when I thought I wouldn’t go from B films to A films. There were times when actresses walked out even after the film was announced. There was pressure and other actors were unsure if I would make it big one day. Maybe they warned these heroines, “If you work with him, you won’t be able to work with us,“He stressed that no actress wanted to work with him and therefore he was unable to move forward.
To his surprise, Zeenat saw his potential and agreed to work with him. Expressing his gratitude, the actor said, “Zeenat ji said, ‘What a handsome man he is!’ “I will do the film with him.” It was Zeenat ji who broke the curse. Zeenat ji had the status of the number one actress of that time, so all the other actresses followed her footsteps and said yes to the films in which I acted. With TaqdeerAfter the release, I became an A-category actor. I will forever be grateful to Zeenat ji for helping me achieve this. Zeenat ji, if you listen to me, I offer you my ‘Pranaam’.” The couple starred in several films together and became a successful couple.
Mithun has previously spoken about being sabotaged in the industry by a fellow actor in an old interview published in Filmfare, saying, “I won’t name any names, I don’t want to get into it.” Of course, as I became a star… How true this is I don’t know, but I could hear that heroines refused to work with me because the other heroes didn’t want them to work with me. Although I faced many obstacles, I thought that if I was good, they would come to me one day. Maybe I’m missing something somewhere, that’s why they say no to me, so I have to correct myself. Somewhere I am 99, I must be 100,” the actor quoted.
