Prince George could follow in his father Prince William‘s steps on the way to the pilot. According to Hello! The 41-year-old royal told Squadron Leader Chrissie Lacey during a garden party at Buckingham Palace that his eldest son would love to visit the Royal Air Force base and is a “budding potential pilot”.

Since he was two years old, George has been sitting in airplane cockpits and meeting pilots at social events. He was well taught by his father, according to Flight Lieutenant Jim Hobkirk, who told PEOPLE after meeting him on a field trip, “I think his dad told him about helicopters, so he knew what they were called and kept saying ‘tail rotor.’ It was nice to see his technical knowledge! There was some training early on!”

In addition to 10-year-old George, William has two children Princess Charlotte And Prince Louis with Princess Kate.

The 10-year-old came into contact with aviation through his family history. King George VI – father of Queen Elizabeth II – was himself a fellow pilot, according to the RAF Museum. Many members of the royal family followed him, including William. He was a search and rescue pilot for the RAF and a rescue helicopter pilot for the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Prince Harry served as a helicopter pilot while serving in the British Army. Although Kate was not a pilot, she was appointed Royal Honorary Air Commodore of RAF Coningsby along with her husband.

The royal family has had a difficult year so far. Kate, 42, has not been seen in public since December 2023, leading many to question her health. In March, she announced the news in a video, explaining: “In January I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time it was thought my condition was not malignant. The surgery was successful. However, tests after the surgery showed that cancer was present. My medical team therefore advised me to undergo preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment… This has obviously been a huge shock and William and I have done everything we can to process and deal with this privately for the benefit of our young family.”

Like Kate, King Charles III. is also battling cancer. After the diagnosis, he announced in a statement: He wanted to “express my deepest gratitude for the many supportive messages and good wishes I have received over the past few days… As all those affected by cancer know, such kind thoughts are the greatest comfort and encouragement.”
