Pokémon Has Sold More Games on Nintendo Switch Than Any Other Platform

The Nintendo Switch is undoubtedly one of the best consoles developed not only by Nintendo but by all competing companies in the field. It has portability, a great game library, and a range of everyone’s favorite monster-catching titles – Pokemon.

However, it hasn’t all been Sunlforas and Alcremies with the Pokemon releases on the Switch, with some entries being a bit lackluster, not to mention poor performance.

However, this hasn’t stopped die-hard fans and kids alike from jumping into the series for the first time, as the Switch has officially surpassed every other system Nintendo has produced in terms of sales of the mainline Pokémon games.

This information comes from Nintendo’s most recent annual report, which states that Scarlet & Violet has shipped an additional 560,000 copies since the start of 2024, bringing the total since release to nearly 25 million. Combine this with Sword & Shield’s 26 million and other mainline games like Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and you’ll reach a whopping 96 million units sold.

This number is astronomical, of course, but also somewhat surprising considering how weak most Game Freak creations have become since their release on the platform. What this number does, however, is firmly establish the Switch’s position as number one for the main Pokemon games, as the runner-up – Game Boy/Game Boy Color – only managed 75 million.

This shows that gamers are clamoring for Pokémon titles more than ever, and despite the problems this console generation has faced, it’s a franchise that will continue to grow in popularity.

With Pokemon Legends: ZA scheduled for 2025 and the potential of the next iteration of the Switch, there’s still time to increase the 95 million even further. Maybe even the 100 million barrier will be broken if the rumors that the Switch 2 will be backwards compatible are true, potentially meaning new Pokémon titles will be released on both platforms.

Either way, give me more Pokémon, Nintendo, I’ll do my best to get you over the 100 million mark.
