It is more than likely that the Pakistan national cricket team will be eliminated from the race for the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup after an unfortunate turn of events that does not go in the team’s favour.
Pakistan lost their first two matches of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 against USA and India respectively, yesterday the Pakistani team finally managed to get a win in a match against Canada. However, their chances of playing their next match seem to be zero.
Pakistan and Sri Lanka face a “state of emergency”
Due to life-threatening flash floods in the city, a state of emergency has been declared in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Due to the severity of the storms, authorities in South Florida have closed flights, highways and regular roads. In fact, the Sri Lankan cricket team is currently stranded in the city due to these restrictions.
Fort Lauderdale is one of the three venues in the US that will host the T20 World Cup matches. It will host three important matches of the tournament between India, Pakistan and the USA. The Sri Lanka vs Nepal match was also cancelled due to heavy rain in and around the stadium.
“Preliminary reports indicate that the rains and flooding have impacted and may continue to impact the operational capabilities of critical infrastructure, including major highways, state and county roads, airports, schools and other critical infrastructure in these counties,” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said in the statement.
Pakistan’s chances of reaching the Super 8
It is more than likely that the Pakistan cricket team will have to return to their home country if the stadium in Florida continues to be hit by floods and rains.
Two matches are scheduled at Fort Lauderdale Stadium this week: Pakistan vs. Sri Lanka on Sunday and the USA vs. Ireland on Friday.
If the USA beats Ireland or the match between these two teams falls through, the US team will easily be able to move into the top 8 teams of the tournament, along with India from Group A. This is because the USA was able to beat Pakistan in one match.
If the USA loses the game against Ireland, Pakistan has a chance to win the game against Sri Lanka and become one of the top two teams in Group A alongside India.
The USA have lost only one game in the tournament, against India, while Pakistan have won only one game, against Canada.
