Oprah Winfrey Goes to the Emergency Room for Stomach Flu and Misses “CBS Mornings”

Gayle Koenig had a little overshare moment while explaining Oprah Winfreyabsence of CBS Morning on Tuesday because of a stomach flu.

At the beginning of the Oprah’s Book Club segment, King candidly explained to author David Wroblewski why Winfrey – who is usually in the studio to celebrate her election – missed the moment to be next to him talking about his book. Trusted.

“I’m so glad you’re here, and I’m so sorry Oprah can’t…” King told Wroblewski. “Yesterday she said, ‘I’m going to pull myself together, I’m going to pull myself together.’ She had some kind of stomach flu where stuff was coming out of both ends.”

King’s co-hosts Nate Burleson and Tony Dokoupil both reacted sharply to the news – and King’s revelation.

“I won’t go into too much detail,” King continued. “But of course she ended up in the hospital [for] Dehydrated and had to be put on an IV. It was a very serious thing. She’s OK… she’s going to be OK.”

King noted that she may have given away too much information and reiterated how much her friend wanted to be there to celebrate the author.

“I hope she’s not mad at me for revealing this detail,” King added. “I wanted to make it clear that while it was important to her and she was really upset that she couldn’t be here today, we’re going to resolve the issue.”

King, Burleson and Dokoupil continued the conversation with the author, who was selected for Oprah’s book club in 2008.

Following King’s revelation, a statement was issued on behalf of Winfrey about the Oprah daily Instagram account further explains her absence.

“@oprah was scheduled to appear on @cbsmornings today to announce her latest selection for @oprahsbookclub. When she came down with a stomach virus over the weekend, @gayleking – being the best friend that she is – offered to make the announcement for her,” the caption read. “We are happy to report that Oprah is doing much better after receiving an IV on the advice of her doctor due to dehydration. We wish her a speedy recovery 🙏🏽.”

Next to the headline was a note with an official statement from The colour purple Representative of the producer.

“Ms. Winfrey is recovering from a stomach virus and has been given an IV for dehydration on the advice of her doctor,” it said. “She is resting and feeling better every day.”

Later Tuesday, King had a video call with Winfrey, who clarified that she was not hospitalized but received fluids in the emergency room.

“I was in the emergency room. I was so dehydrated,” Winfrey said. “I had a dry mouth and I couldn’t keep enough water down to stay hydrated, so I went to the emergency room for that, and that was it.”

Regarding her current condition, Winfrey said: “I’m not 100 yet, but I’m on my way to 100.” However, she noted that a Tuesday CBS Morning A performance was out of the question because she was “too weak to get on a plane.”

In the caption of her post, King wrote, “She had to be incapacitated due to a stomach virus that caused such dehydration that she went to the hospital to get an IV.”

“I thought I had made this clear, but then I’m surprised to see headlines screaming, ‘Oprah is in the hospital!’ (She was NOT!) And I’m bombarded with calls asking if Oprah is OK,” King added. “The answer is yes! And now we’re going straight to the source.”

The long-standing friendship between Winfrey and King knows no bounds. Last week, Winfrey was part of the celebrations when she Hosted the wedding of King’s son William Bumpus Jr. on their property.

“Oprah was there, of course, because it was at Oprah’s house,” King said when he announced the news on CBS Morningand added with a giggle that “it’s a very nice venue” and “the prices are very reasonable.”
