  • Coming soon, Rivian R1T and R1S occupants will be able to watch YouTube videos via a native app on their infotainment screen while parked.
  • In addition, they will soon be able to cast videos from their devices directly to the screen.
  • The new additions to the vehicles’ infotainment system are designed to help keep drivers entertained during charging stops.

The 15-inch screen in the center of the dashboard of the Rivian R1S and R1T may resemble a television, but until now there have been few entertainment options. Thanks to the integration of Google Cast and YouTube, you will soon be able to enjoy not only your own videos, but also content from YouTubers like MrBeast on the infotainment screen.

The new services will be available as a native app on the central display in the coming months, allowing users to search for videos, browse and play content. However, for everyone’s safety, the video you are watching will automatically pause when the vehicle enters Drive mode.

Google Cast works similarly, but is controlled by your phone or tablet (it works with both Apple and Android devices). This feature allows you to send the video you are watching on YouTube, for example, to the screen so you can watch it there.

Better yet, the videos stored internally on some users’ phones can be played on the screen, so you can watch yourself tackle a difficult off-road course seconds after stopping.

While these are certainly not the first apps to be added to Rivian’s infotainment screen, they may be some of the most entertaining. While you can currently support your mental wellbeing with apps like Headspace and Sleepio, the system lacks entertainment-focused applications.

This is a significant omission for an electric vehicle, in which occupants can be stranded for extended periods during charging stops. Other automakers have already signed deals with entertainment providers like Amazon Prime, Netflix and, of course, YouTube to keep drivers entertained while they wait for their vehicle to charge.

Now Rivian owners can also enjoy entertainment without draining their phone’s battery.
