Navjyot Singh Sidhu Comments on the Opening Combination for the India vs Pakistan Clash

Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu shared his view and said that Yashasvi Jaiswal should have opened with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should have played as number three for India in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.

India’s next game

India will face Pakistan in their next match in the 2024 T20 World Cup at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on Sunday. The Men in Blue go into this match having beaten Ireland by 8 wickets. Meanwhile, Babar Azam-led Pakistan suffered a disappointing defeat to the USA in the Super Over in the final match of the premier event.

Sidhu’s perspective on team composition

Speaking at a special Star Sports Press Room, Sidhu said the Men in Blue had changed the team composition to make room for Shivam Dube and Axar Patel.

“Ideally, the scenario from my point of view should have been a left-right combination, Yashasvi Jaiswal should have started with Rohit Sharma and Virat as number 3. But from the team’s point of view, they changed the combination because then Shivam Dube and Axar Patel would not have had the opportunity to play. So they made this combination for a correct composition where Axar Patel bats as number 8, especially on this pitch where the bowlers have an advantage,” Sidhu was quoted as saying in a press release by Star Sports.

Tournament conditions

The former cricketer added that if the 2024 T20 World Cup had started in the West Indies, the Men in Blue would have started with Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal as openers.

“If the tournament had started in West Indies, we would have seen Rohit and Yashasvi opening the match, there would have been no need for the 6th or 7th bowler. From that perspective, the combination of Rohit and Virat is important because they are both experienced players and they know that the first 6 overs are important and they can score runs after that. You cannot expect 200 runs on this pitch, 130 or 140 runs would be good and this combination will work,” he added.
