Monaco GP: Lewis Hamilton Leads in First Practice, Mercedes Shows Encouraging Pace on Famous Street Circuit

Lewis Hamilton was the best in the first practice session of the Monaco Grand Prix and Mercedes delivered an encouraging performance on the famous street circuit.

With his time of 1:12.169 seconds, Hamilton was just ahead of Oscar Piastri of McLaren. The seven-time world champion’s teammate, George Russell, was a tenth of a second behind in third.

Lando Norris, who like the top three drove his fastest lap on the softest – and theoretically fastest – tyre compound, finished fourth for McLaren.

Championship leader Max Verstappen finished 11th as he opted to use only the medium tyre, with his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez finishing one place behind.

Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari was damaged after colliding with debris from Zhou Guanyu’s Sauber following a collision with the wall.

Ferrari, the team many consider favourites to win in Monaco, also decided to save their soft tyres for later in the weekend, but Charles Leclerc finished fifth with an impressive lap on the medium compound, while Carlos Sainz was tenth.

Hamilton’s position at the top of the timesheets was protected by a brief shower of rain that came as the cars returned to the track for the final ten minutes of the session following a red flag that followed Sauber’s Zhou Guanyu’s impact with a barrier.
