Misbah Ul Haq Selects Pakistan’s Opening Pair for the 2024 T20 World Cup

Despite Pakistan‘s convincing victory over Ireland Going into the last T20I match and finally the three-match series, concerns are high in the Men in Green camp, especially about their opening combination for the upcoming one T20 World Cup 2024.

Opening difficulties for Pakistan

Pakistan have faced challenges since the separation of the formidable duo in their opening partnership in T20Is Babar Azam And Mohammad Rizwan by the new team management. While Rizwan retained his position as opener, Babar moved back to number three with explosiveness Saim Ayub introduced at the top to add pace to the innings. However, this tactical change did not yield the desired results as Ayub’s performances with the bat were poor.

A cause for concern

Ayub’s batting record in T20Is is a matter of concern for the Pakistan team management. Despite being given ample opportunities, Ayub failed to make a significant impact. He managed just 290 runs in 18 innings at a dismal average of around 16. Furthermore, his strike rate of 130 falls short of modern T20 standards, further compounding the opening dilemma for Pakistan.

Misbah ul Haq’s perspective: Ideal opening combination

Now former Pakistan captain Misbah Ul Haq has pondered the ideal opening combination for Pakistan in the upcoming global showpiece event. While fans and experts are in favor of reuniting Babar and Rizwan as openers, Misbah suggested sticking to the left-hand and right-hand style of play. He stressed the importance of a right-left combination at the top and believed that the contrasting styles of Babar or Rizwan and Ayub can complement each other effectively.

“I think the best opening combination from a team perspective would be a right-left combination. That would be ideal. They are currently playing against Saim Ayub who is not delivering at the moment. I feel that different types of players – Saim on the one hand and Babar or Rizwan on the other – can complement each other well.” Misbah was quoted by Geo Super.
