The new Copilot+ computers are still scheduled to launch on June 18, but Microsoft is holding back the automatic screenshot feature for everyone, including Windows Insiders. The new plan is to eventually release it as a beta-only program while the company fixes the security issues.
Recall is the upcoming Copilot+ feature that acts as your PC’s “photographic memory” by taking a screenshot of everything you do every few seconds. Users can then have an AI model search through the images based on the text or image content they contain.
In a updated blog post The Redmond tech giant said late Thursday that Recall will come later, and then only for members of the Windows Insider program. The company promised to publish another blog post soon to let WIP members know how to access it.
Microsoft promised that Recall would come “soon,” although there is no concrete timeline for when or how. Last week, security researchers and a suspicious customer base forced Microsoft to Withdraw recall plans. The automatic screenshot program was originally supposed to be enabled on all Copilot+ PCs from the start, but now Windows 11 gives users the option to enable it when they first boot up their new computer.
Security experts pointed out the glaring privacy flaws in Microsoft’s design: screenshots and text were easily accessible in the Windows AppData folder, and a malicious actor with access to the PC could harvest massive amounts of user data. This could include financial information or other sensitive personal data.
Now Microsoft will force all users to use Windows Hello to access the Timeline feature. Also, anyone who wants to access the files will have to go through an enhanced security check to sign in to Windows Hello first.
By moving to a beta program, “we are ensuring the experience meets our high quality and safety standards,” the company explained in its updated blog post.
The company also clarified that Recall would still be limited to the new Copilot+ PCs. According to Microsoft, this is due to the NPU hardware requirements of the new PCs. Copilot+ requires an NPU with at least 40 TOPS to be eligible for this class of PC with all the latest AI features.
However, a program called TotalRecall already allows non-Copilot+ PCs to access the recall function; no ARM-based chip is required. This comes with Disadvantagessince the NPU does a lot of the work for the AI features, but if you’re tech savvy enough and really want to see your PC usage history, you can always pull it up.
