Mats Hummels and Serge Gnabry Are Among the Big Names Missing from the German Squad for the 2024 European Championship

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has picked a preliminary squad of 27 players for Euro 2024 on home soil, but has left out a handful of experienced names in favor of fresh blood.

The team is desperate to make an impact this summer, having been eliminated from the group at the last two World Cups and failing to progress past the last 16 at Euro 2020.

Naglesmann, who has already been signed to lead Germany to the 2026 World Cup following a recent new contract, has played with some players who have little to no international experience.

Not getting the call are Borussia Dortmund’s experienced central defender Mats Hummels, who defied his 35 years to play like a colossus en route to the Champions League final, and Bayern Munich duo Serge Gnabry and Leon Goretzka. Timo Werner is also missing, which is less surprising after he struggled to get his stalled career back on track during a loan spell at Tottenham Hotspur.

There is also no Julian Brandt or Emre Can and no reprieve for 22-year-old Karim Adeyemi, who has not been called up to the German senior national team squad since the 2022 World Cup.

Four of the players selected by Nagelsmann – Maximilian Beier, Aleksandar Pavlovic and the goalkeepers Alexander Nübel and Oliver Baumann – have not yet played a single international match for the senior national team. Seven others like Pascal Gross and Robin Koch are not necessarily young, but have made fewer than ten appearances.

But the boss didn’t give up all the seniority. Manuel Neuer, Thomas Müller and the recently retired Toni Kroos each played well over 100 times for their country. With 75 appearances at the age of 33, Ilkay Gündogan is another leader among the squad leaders.

The squad for Euro 2024 can contain a maximum of 26 players, which means that Nagelsmann will have to cut one player before the tournament – probably from the four goalkeepers. However, the decision will only be made after Germany has played friendly games against Ukraine and Greece at the beginning of June.
