India Achieves 97% Mobile Network Coverage in Villages, 95% Connected with 4G: Government Report
Mobile network coverage in rural India has reached an impressive 97%, with approximately 6,22,840 villages out of 6,44,131 villages now having mobile connectivity. Among these, 6,14,564 villages (95%) are equipped with 4G mobile connectivity, according to data shared by the government in Parliament on Thursday.
Focus on Remote Areas and Tribal Settlements
Dr. Chandrashekar Pemmassani, Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, revealed that under the Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Adiwasi Nyay Maha Abhiyan (PM Janman), 4,543 Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) settlements were identified for mobile connectivity. Out of these, 1,136 PVTG settlements are now covered.
As of October 31, 1,018 mobile towers have been approved under various projects funded by the Digital India Initiative, specifically to provide 4G coverage to these tribal regions. The estimated expenditure for this initiative is around ₹1,014 crore.
Expansion of 5G Services
The Minister further stated that 5G services are now available in 779 out of 783 districts across the country, with over 4.6 lakh 5G Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) already deployed. These developments align with the government’s efforts to enhance telecom connectivity under the Digital India Initiative.
The rollout of 5G services has been accelerated through the auction and allocation of sufficient spectrum, along with financial reforms. Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) have exceeded the minimum rollout obligations set by the Application Invitation Notice (AIA) for spectrum auctions.
Government’s Commitment to Connectivity
The government remains committed to expanding telecom infrastructure in rural, remote, and hilly areas, including PVTG settlements. This effort aims to bridge the digital divide and ensure that more people benefit from advancements in mobile and 5G connectivity.
By focusing on expanding both 4G and 5G services, India is setting the stage for robust digital inclusion and economic growth.
