Justin Baldoni Addresses Book Fans’ Criticism of It Ends With Us

fans of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel, It ends with us, I said a lot about it eagerly awaited Film adaptation with Blake Lively And Justin Baldoni as Lily Bloom and Ryle Kincaid.

Production officially started in May 2023 and not long after Photos from the set surfaced online showing the cast’s costumes and Lively’s new red hair. However, not many fans were impressed with Lively’s costumes.

Chat ahead with ET’s Denny Directo the film’s premiere on August 9thIt’s not Baldoni worried about the criticism. Instead this Jane the Virgin Alum has some advice for worried fans: “Just watch the movie.”

“I get it, when you love something so much, you know social media is great.” [the] “It gives the fans a voice,” he says. “And if it weren’t for the fans, we wouldn’t be making this movie.” So let them talk. And I’m not too worried about that.

Baldoni argues that the photos only show “a moment from a part of Lily’s life” and do not provide full context for what the film will ultimately look like.

“We don’t always think about why their clothes look the way they do in that area. And when you see the film, everything makes sense,” he says confidently.

Hoover also gives fans some reassurance by responding to criticism the decision to make the characters older.

“I started writing this book over 10 years ago when I was in my early 30s [and] As new adults, the genre and younger age groups were very popular with publishers at the time. But I think as she gets older it gets harder and closer to home,” she tells ET, adding that she’s “really happy” about the change.

Profusely Lively’s castingHoover says she will “never imagine anyone else” as Lily after seeing the actress in the role. “She is absolutely perfect for the role. When he told me she was thinking about accepting her, I refused to get excited because I thought, ‘Oh, what if it doesn’t happen?’ because I was so excited [it] was a possibility. And, man, she just killed it,” she admits.

Addressing fans directly, Hoover added: “I know there’s a little bit of criticism about it, but personally I was so relieved. I can’t emphasize enough: If you love the book, I think you’ll love the movie too.”

The film, directed by Baldoni, also stars Hasan Minhaj And Jenny Slate. Like the book, it follows 23-year-old Lily (Lively), a florist caught between 30-year-old abusive surgeon Ryle (Baldoni) and her childhood sweetheart Atlas (Brandon Sklenar).

The 2016 book is loosely based on Hoover’s own childhood and focuses on themes such as domestic violence. “I just want everyone to know how grateful I am to my mother, who pulled us out of a scary situation as a little girl and brought us here to this house that doesn’t look like much, but this house was full of love and joy.” , Hoover said in an Instagram video shared January 2023. “Thank you, Mom, for making this very difficult decision. This house holds nothing but wonderful memories for me.”

“We are now discussing a film based on a book loosely inspired by my mother,” Hoover continued. “It’s bittersweet. So many people had to go through that. But knowing that my mom’s decision helped so many people get out of it… I love you, mom.”

Doing double duty as a director and actor can be challenging, but Baldoni tells ET that it “comes naturally” to him.

“When you love something so much and when you’re as deeply touched and moved by something as I was by this book, it’s just natural,” he shares. “And I think what comes from the heart hits the heart, and that’s what kept me going throughout the process, knowing that we’re working on something special that has the potential to impact millions of lives.”

“So, yeah, it was fun, it was interesting, it was healing, it was all of that,” he adds. “It was complex, but it was beautiful, it was life.”
