IPL 2024: Irfan Pathan, Mohammad Kaif and Other Cricket Experts Pick Their Top Four Playoff Teams

The competition for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 The playoff spots are heating up. While Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) And Rajasthan Royals (RR) have already secured their places, five teams are still in the running for the remaining two places. Chennai Super Kings (CSK), SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), Delhi Capitals (DC), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) And Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) everyone is fighting for a place in the top four. Notably, the crucial match between RCB and CSK on May 18 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru is likely to be a potential knockout as the winner moves closer to the playoffs and the loser faces elimination.

IPL 2024 Playoffs Predictions by Former Cricketers

Ahead of the playoffs, former cricketers shared their predictions on Star Sports. Irfan Pathan, Ambati Rayudu, Mohammad Kaif, Matthew Hayden And Tom Moody have been thinking about which teams they think will secure the playoff spots.

Irfan Pathan’s selection

Irfan predicted that KKR, RR, SRH and CSK would make it to the playoffs. Explaining his tips on CSK, Pathan emphasized that CSK has a knack for finding ways to succeed and called them a legacy team. Pathan stressed that CSK is formidable in high-stakes situations due to its experienced squad and strategic acumen.

“Kolkata, Rajasthan, Hyderabad and… Chennai Super Kings are my favorites. Because I believe CSK will find a way or the other to reach the playoffs. They are a legacy team,” Irfan said.

Ambati Rayudu’s decisions

Rayudu, a former CSK star, shared his top four: KKR, followed by CSK, with RR and SRH rounding out the list. Rayudu’s confidence in CSK was based on his intimate knowledge of the team’s inner workings and its historical resilience.

“My top four predictions for now are: KKR at the top, followed by Chennai Super Kings in second place. RR and SRH the other two”, Rayudu said.

Mohammad Kaif’s predictions

Commentary panel member Kaif also placed KKR at the top, followed by RR, SRH and CSK. For CSK, he highlighted their experience in dealing with pressure situations and their proven track record in crucial games.

“For me, KKR is at the top. In second place would be the (Rajasthan) Royals. Third place would be (Sunrisers) Hyderabad and fourth place I would bet on CSK because they know how to perform in the big games.” Kaif said.

Matthew Hayden’s selection

Former CSK opener Hayden chose KKR, RR, SRH and CSK. He acknowledged RR’s recent struggles but believed in their ability to turn things around given their strong squad. Hayden pointed to SRH’s robust bowling attack and solid middle order as key factors in their playoff contention. Speaking about CSK, he pointed out their legendary status and the importance of the upcoming clash against RCB and predicted that their strategic mindset and experienced players would help them secure a place in the playoffs.

“My top four, in no particular order, are… well, one actually qualified. KKR are definitely there. I will choose Rajasthan Royals. They have to overcome this bad crisis they are in (losing three games in a row). Then I will choose Sunrisers Hyderabad as they have their home games and then CSK to win the derby against RCB on May 18.”

Tom Moody’s Top 4

Former SRH coach Tom Moody expressed similar views and picked KKR, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings as his playoff contenders. He acknowledged CSK’s experience and heritage as key factors in their favor.

“My top four in the playoffs would be KKR in first place, Rajasthan Royals in second place, Sunrisers Hyderabad in third place and Chennai Super Kings who have just dropped to fourth place,” Moody said.
