Inter Miami Claims a 1-0 Win Over DC United Thanks to a Late Goal from Leo Campana

Inter Miami returned to winning ways with a narrow 1-0 victory over DC United in Major League Soccer on Saturday evening.

It may not have been the way Miami Gerardo “Tata” Martino envisioned, but it’s another three points for the South Florida team. With the win over DC, the Herons retain their place at the top of the Supporters’ Shield standings with 31 points collected from 15 games played.

The Herons welcomed the return of superstar Lionel Messi, who was back in the swing of things after the 36-year-old sat out the 0-0 draw with Orlando City in midweek. However, Messi – like his best mate Luis Suarez – was a little off the pace as the Herons struggled to create any real chances for most of the game.

DC managed to amass 1.06 xG and 15 shots, while Miami averaged .77 and eight shots – but none of that mattered as the clock ticked at Chase Stadium. It wasn’t Suarez, Messi or new signing Matias Rojas who saved the day – it was Leo Campana.

The Ecuadorian came on as a substitute towards the end of the game and immediately caused a stir when he parried away Sergio Busquets’ high-ball. The shirtless celebration may have been a bit over the top, but that won’t matter to Campana as he scored his fourth goal contribution in just 441 minutes of play to secure the win for Miami.

Campana was just beginning to find his rhythm toward the end of last season for Miami. The former Wolverhampton Wanderers striker scored 11 goals in all appearances for Miami and showed real promise with Josef Martinez set to leave the club – meaning he could have a chance to truly make the center forward position his own.

That changed when rumors emerged about a possible reunion between Suarez and Messi, one of the greatest football duos of all time. Despite still being late in his career, Suarez has still proven to be a quality striker with 11 goals for Miami in 2024.

Suarez’s ruthless efficiency coupled with his chemistry with Messi saw Campana’s minutes reduced. Not only did he play less than 500 minutes, but Campana only managed five starts. However, he made the most of his limited minutes and demonstrated his quality with three goals and an assist.

Perhaps one day Martino will opt for a formation that allows Campana and Suarez to enter the field at the same time.

But Martino rarely deviates from his 4-3-3 system, and while Suarez will be relied upon for most of the season, Campana reminded everyone of the quality he possesses and that at the end in the Copa America opener could earn more minutes this summer if Suarez leaves to move to Uruguay.
