India Women’s Cricket Team | White Ferns | Smriti Mandhana

Stylish southpaw Smriti Mandhana once again showed her class in the first T20I match against Kiwis. But unfortunately she couldn’t imagine her team securing victory because the rest of the team couldn’t continue their good start. The win gave New Zealand a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series.

They went from 103/2 in 11.2 overs to 136 runs in 19.1 overs. It really sums up the story of the middle problem of Indian women. Harmanpreet Kaur stayed in the middle for a while but failed to lead the team to victory.

Earlier, they had put together a brilliant 98-run partnership between Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues for the second wicket and reached the 100-run mark in the 11th over of the chase.

The more I bat till 18 overs, the more we will not collapse – Smriti Mandhana

The opening batswoman stated that she needs to bat 20 overs or at least 18 overs to lead the team to victory. She feels her partnership with Jemimah was crucial, but losing both in quick succession made things uncomfortable.

“My wicket and that of Jemimah proved crucial. Getting out one after the other in T20s is costly. If you are aiming for 160 and the run rate is above 7 or 8, we need to plan and play better next time. “It didn’t work today,” Mandhana said after the game.

“Practically I would say I have to bat till 20 overs, that is the best option. The more I bat till the 18th over, the more we won’t collapse because if the top three or four batsmen till the 18th-20th over. Over can beat, the rest can revolve around them. I will try that tactically,” Smriti Mandhana added.

We will try to win the next two games –

Furthermore, she expressed her optimism and added that they will try to make the most of their chance in the remaining games. She feels that spirit is high in the team and that she wants to perform when she steps on the field.

“If we are 1-0 down we will be under pressure. Everyone will strive to be better than today and win the next two games for India. This is what we think and not what happened today,” she said.

Well, as Smriti Mandhana said, the lack of finishers in the team was clearly visible in the first T20I match. It would be interesting to see whether they would bring Mithali Raj for the crucial match or not.
