Imax Announces 2025 Slate: Biggest Movie Ever Made on Its Cameras, Including ‘M:I 8’, ‘Superman: Legacy’ and ‘Tron: Ares’

After the worldwide success of Oppenheimer And Dune: Part TwoIn 2025, Imax looks forward to its largest “shot for Imax” list ever, including at least 14 titles currently shot on Imax films or Imax-certified digital cameras and scheduled for release next year.

The company said today that planning for 2025 has more than doubled than any previous year in its history, as more filmmakers and studios from Hollywood and overseas produce for its platform. (Scroll down to see the full 2025 roster.)

The surge in Imax-focused production follows a string of historic box office successes for films shot on the proprietary cameras, although its nearly 1,700 commercial locations account for less than 1% of all screens worldwide.

Recent highlights include over 20% of global box office (over $190 million) at Universal Oppenheimer. Christopher Nolan shot the Oscar winner entirely with Imax film cameras. It is the fifth highest-grossing Imax film of all time.

On Warner Bros./Legendary Dune: Part TwoShot entirely on Imax-certified digital cameras, the film grossed 21% of the worldwide box office (over $145 million).

That means, as Imax CEO Rich Gelfond enthused today, one in five tickets for each of these films was purchased at Imax. “We always knew that Imax was a very valuable offering to audiences,” he said. “It took longer than we hoped for it to become public in a dramatic way.”

Gelfond noted, “Imax is as much about production excellence as it is about presenting the biggest blockbuster films. Audiences simply understand that when you see a film made for Imax in Imax, you’re getting the best, most immersive cinematic experience money can buy. For this reason, we achieve a large share of global box office revenue with these titles.”

Imax is also developing and completing the launch of four next-generation 15/65mm film cameras and is on track to beta test the first prototypes by August 2024, with the new cameras expected to be available by the end of the year go into production.

Imax hired filmmakers and cinematographers such as Nolan, Jordan Peele and Hoyte van Hoytema to identify new specifications and features for the prototype.

Upcoming films using Imax-certified digital cameras also include Joseph Kosinski’s Formula 1 project and Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux (including a select run in the 70mm Imax film) and Christopher McQuarries Mission: Impossible 8.
