Hyundai is recalling 795 trucks and crossovers due to a possible loss of power steering. Although the recall is relatively small, it affects the 2024 Tucson and 2024 Santa Cruz.

The safety recall report states that both models may have been equipped with a power steering unit whose circuit board was assembled using contaminated flux, raising the possibility of a short circuit that could cause the power steering unit to malfunction.

If this happens, power steering may be lost. This poses a safety risk as the government notes that a “sudden, unexpected loss of power steering during vehicle operation may increase the risk of an accident.”

The fix is relatively straightforward, with the affected models having their electric power steering drivetrain replaced free of charge. Owner notifications are due to be sent out in August, and the issue primarily affects the Santa Cruz, with 679 being affected by the recall.
Upon further investigation into the issue, Hyundai stated that they identified five vehicles with malfunctions at the vehicle processing centers in mid-May. This information was forwarded to the next location and an investigation was launched.
This eventually led to the recall, and Hyundai said two additional incidents involving vehicles sold to consumers were reported. However, the automaker is not aware of any injuries or accidents related to the recall.
