Harrison Butker is Defended by Whoopi Goldberg – and No One Else

Everyone’s talking about Harrison Butker.

He’s the Kansas City Chiefs kicker who angered your mother, your sister and every Taylor Swift fan with that controversial commencement speech at Benedictine College.

However, there are still some who defend his words. No, not the NFL. Not his teammate Travis Kelce. It turns out Whoopi Goldberg is fighting for Harrison’s right to say all of these deplorable things.

And maybe she’s right?

What did Harrison Butker say?

Before we delve into the rebuttal, let’s recap the word vomit that Harrison spat out during his speech.

The Kansas City Chiefs player made headlines after sharing his sexist and anti-LGBTQIA+ views to a room full of college graduates. Yes, he gave a talk at a Catholic school, and yes, he got an overwhelmingly positive response from the people who were actually in the room where it happened. He reportedly received a standing ovation.

However, the global audience that saw his performance reacted very differently, especially working women.

“I want to speak to you directly for a moment because I think you, the women, have been told the most diabolical lies,” Harrison said, before gushing about how great life as a tradwife is.

“How many of you are sitting here now, about to cross this stage, thinking about all the promotions and titles you will receive in your career? Some of you may have successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most looking forward to your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”

As you can imagine, his comments didn’t sit well with most people, which is why it was an issue The view.

Whoopi Goldberg defends Harrison Butker’s controversial speech

“Listen, I like it when people say what they have to say. He’s at a Catholic college, he’s a staunch Catholic, these are his beliefs and he’s welcome there,” panelist Whoopi Goldberg began The view talked about Harrison’s speech.

She quickly clarified that people don’t have to “believe” or “accept” his beliefs before heeding the warning that they should “respect” them.

“We want to show respect to people whose ideas differ from ours,” she said.

“I’m okay with him saying whatever he says, and if the women who sat there take his advice, good for them, they’ll be happy.” If they don’t, good for them, because they will be happy in another way. That’s my attitude,” she said.

But Whoopi was pretty alone in that feeling, especially when she compared Harrison’s speech to Colin Kaepernick’s activism.

Alyssa Farah Griffin had a “big problem” with him praising the role of a “housewife” while simultaneously “ignoring half of the Bible” that encourages women to be “leaders in the community.” In the meantime. Joy Behar simply added that the man needed “a therapist.”

Several other celebrities criticized his speech: “Don’t speak for us!”

While Whoopi was ready to play devil’s advocate and defend Harrison Butker, other female celebrities pounced on him over his comments.

“Who is [Butker] Tell us?” Jenna Bush Hager joked when the topic came up on Today. Hoda Kotb agreed, adding, “Don’t speak for us. I think that’s a thing. Stop it, for the women out there speak.”

Maria Shriver came down hard on Harrison and demanded that he learn some “dignity and respect.”

“As a woman who has embraced my calling to live a meaningful life inside and outside the home to educate not only good people but also our country in various ways, I believe it is demeaning to women to insinuate that her decisions are made outside of being a wife and motherhood pales in comparison to that of a housewife,” Maria said in her lengthy statement divided on X.

But perhaps it was Maren Morris who said it best on Instagram. For weeks, women have been grappling with a viral question: Would you rather be alone in the forest with a man or with a bear?

After listening to this guy’s bigoted nonsense, Maren took to her social media to share her response. “I choose the bear,” she wrote.

Same, Maren. THE SAME THING.
