Farah Khan Explains Why She Felt Like a “charity Case” for Her Film Family: “We Had Lost All Our Money…”

Farah Khan is undoubtedly one of the most famous names in the Hindi film industry. She started out as a choreographer in the early 90s and later switched to directing. She has directed some of the biggest Bollywood hits, including Main Hoon Na, Om Shanti Om, Tees Maar Khanand more. Despite coming from a film family, Farah’s childhood was not easy and she had to endure many hardships while growing up.

For those who don’t know, Farah Khan is the daughter of stuntman-turned-producer Kamran Khan and her mother Menaka Irani. This means that the 59-year-old is related to Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar on her mother’s side. In a recent conversation with Radio Nasha, Farah spoke about how she and her brother Sajid Khan were considered the “poor cousins” because their father wasn’t as successful as others.

Recalling her childhood, Farah shared that her father lost all his money when his film flopped when she was just five years old. She said that they had a “rich to poor” story and were considered “charity cases” by the rest of the family. After losing all his wealth, Farah’s father became addicted to alcohol and died when she was just 18. Talking more about her family background, Farah said:

“Yes, I came from a film family, but when I was five, we were the poor cousins. We had lost all our money, dad’s film was a flop. We had a rich-to-poverty story. They were all great and we were the welfare cases. Sajid and I and our mother were the welfare cases. But of course, they were very nice to us. They let us live in their house.”

When Farah Khan revealed that her father died with only 30 rupees in his pocket

Earlier, in a conversation with Maniesh Paul, Farah Khan had revealed that her father had only Rs 30 in his pocket when he died. The filmmaker also revealed that she and her brother had difficulty raising money for their father’s funeral. Farah added that her brother had told the same story on Big Boss once. In her words:

“The previous night, he had played taash (cards) and the only money he had in his pocket was the Rs 30 he had won from those games. Sajid also told this story on Bigg Boss and explained how we had to collect money from various sources to fund our father’s funeral.”

When Sajid Khan revealed how her father became an alcoholic

Farah Khan’s brother Sajid Khan, who is also a well-known name in the industry, once spoke about their father. While he Time out with Ankit Taking to his YouTube channel, the 53-year-old producer revealed that his father stopped making B-grade films after his birth. Sharing that his father decided to make an A-grade film with Sanjeev Kumar, Sajid said:

“He decided to make a big A-grade film with Sanjeev Kumar. That film never got made. Aadhi films were Sanjeev Kumar’s big deal. My father lost all his money. Then my father became an alcoholic and my parents divorced.”
