SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Intelligent energy management company Eaton today announced that it is now offering a more powerful version of its low-voltage 48-volt DC-DC converter for commercial and off-highway vehicles designed to withstand the harsh environments in which these vehicles are used.

“Our new converter has an output current capacity of up to 40 amps and can be installed in the vehicle in areas exposed to very harsh conditions, including frame rails, battery and engine compartments,” said Ben Karrer, technical manager for low voltage and power conversion, Eaton’s Mobility Group. “These are extreme environments with adverse conditions, shock and vibration that require robust protection features.”

Eaton’s DC/DC converter takes power from a 48-volt system and converts it down to 12 volts to power accessories and other low-power systems. This design ensures that key devices – including anti-lock brakes and power steering – function even in the event of a power outage, making it unique among product offerings in this area.

There is growing demand for 48-volt DC/DC converters as off-highway and commercial vehicle manufacturers increasingly move to dual-voltage electrical architectures. Eaton’s converters feature an air-cooled, natural convection design for easy integration and can operate in ambient temperatures up to 85 degrees Celsius. In addition, the converters are designed for high efficiency to prevent power loss over a wide operating range.

The converters are also designed to reduce weight and save space. Most modern vehicles run on 12 volts or 24 volts. A switch to 48 volts results in up to four times the voltage, which reduces the electrical current by the same proportion. Because wire size is selected based on electrical current strength, reducing current allows smaller wires to be used, reducing weight and helping to alleviate packaging problems.

Eaton’s DC/DC converter portfolio offers flexibility through multiple power and voltage levels and can be optimized to work seamlessly with a manufacturer’s charging system specifications. It also features a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus that allows direct communication from the DC/DC converter to other vehicle electronic control devices to transmit diagnostic information.

“This device is the ideal solution for manufacturers who need a reliable way to handle the higher power loads of modern commercial and off-highway vehicles,” said Karrer.
