Cucumber Salmonella Outbreak Sickens Dozens Across U.S.

Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Recalled Cucumbers Sickens Dozens Across 18 U.S. States

Federal health officials announced Friday that nearly four dozen people across 18 states have fallen ill due to a growing salmonella outbreak tied to cucumbers distributed to grocery stores, restaurants, hospitals, and even cruise ships, including popular retailers like Target.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the contaminated cucumbers were grown by Bedner Growers in Florida and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales between April 29 and May 19. At least 16 people have been hospitalized so far, raising serious concerns about the scope and severity of the outbreak.

Cases Spread Beyond Land

The outbreak includes at least six passengers who became sick aboard cruise ships departing from U.S. ports between late March and mid-April. Health officials warn that the actual number of infections may be significantly higher, and the outbreak could potentially impact more states than currently known.

Several companies, including Target, have recalled not only whole cucumbers but also various prepared food items such as sandwiches, salsas, salads, and vegetable rolls that used the contaminated produce. A full list of recalled products is available on the FDA’s recall database.

Outbreak Traced Back to Earlier Incident

This current investigation stems from a follow-up to a 2024 salmonella outbreak, which affected 551 people across 34 states and Washington D.C., leading to 155 hospitalizations. That outbreak was traced back to untreated canal water used on farms operated by both Bedner Growers and Thomas Produce Company. Investigators found multiple strains of salmonella in the canal water linked to patient samples.

In the new investigation, FDA officials detected the same salmonella strain responsible for the illnesses in cucumber samples collected at a Pennsylvania distribution center. Additionally, several other salmonella strains matched those previously recorded in national health databases.

Know the Symptoms

Salmonella poisoning can cause symptoms like diarrhea, high fever, vomiting, dehydration, and abdominal cramps. While most healthy individuals recover within a week, the infection can become dangerous in young children, elderly adults, or people with weakened immune systems, sometimes requiring hospitalization.

If you suspect exposure to contaminated cucumbers or are experiencing symptoms, seek medical attention promptly. For detailed updates and food safety tips, visit the CDC’s official salmonella outbreak page.
