Charlotte FC vs LA Galaxy: Smith Looks to Build on ‘messy’ Win Over Fire – Football News

Dean Smith wants his Charlotte FC side to build on their 1-0 win over the Chicago Fire when they host the LA Galaxy this weekend.

Thanks to Ashley Westwood’s 60th-minute winner, Charlotte made it a third win in a row as they narrowly beat the Fire in midweek.

The three-game winning streak has lifted Charlotte to fifth place in the Eastern Conference, and while Smith wasn’t thrilled with the manner of the win over Chicago, he appreciated his team’s attitude.

“I saw the mentality, but I didn’t see a football game that I liked. It certainly won’t make the highlight,” Smith told reporters.

“It wasn’t a thriller at all. It was a messy game for both teams but we showed a really good mentality and limited them to a few chances and we took the chance we had from a set piece.”

The Galaxy, meanwhile, played to a 2-2 draw with Minnesota United on Wednesday, leaving them fifth in the Western Conference and four points behind leaders Real Salt Lake.

Minnesota equalized with just 10 minutes left in the game, but Galaxy head coach Greg Vanney still felt it was a solid point for his team.

“We have to try to take advantage of this point and start healing, recovering and moving on to the next point,” Vanney said.

“[It is a] Good, hard-fought point at the end of the day, even though we had the chance to get three there at the end.”

Charlotte FC – Ashley Westwood

Westwood scored the only goal after an hour in Charlotte’s win over Chicago on Wednesday. Nine of Charlotte’s 11 goals since March 23 have come after halftime, and Westwood will be hoping to spur his team on by scoring again this Saturday.

LA Galaxy – Riqui Puig

Puig assisted on both of the Galaxy’s goals against Minnesota on Wednesday after also assisting on both of the Galaxy’s goals on Saturday against Salt Lake. Puig is the first Galaxy player since Romain Alessandrini in 2018 to record multiple assists in consecutive games, and he hopes to make it three such games in a row this weekend.

Charlotte and the Galaxy each recorded a 1-0 away win against each other. Both goals came after the 70th minute.

The Galaxy have drawn their last three games, with the last two ending 2-2. In the last 22 games, the Galaxy have scored two or more goals 15 times and allowed two or more goals 17 times.

Charlotte has won three games in a row and kept clean sheets in all three games. This is the first time in club history that Charlotte has kept a clean sheet in three consecutive games, and with home advantage this weekend they look to be the favorites for the three points on Saturday.
