How to prepare chickpeas from the air fryer

For this air fryer chickpea recipe you need three simple ingredients:

Ingredients

  • Chickpeas, Naturally! For convenience, I almost always use canned ones.
  • Extra virgin olive oil – This causes the chickpeas to brown and crisp when cooked.
  • And sea salt – To bring out the nutty flavor of the chickpeas.

Seasoning ideas for chickpeas from the air fryer

The crispy chickpeas are delicious with olive oil and sea salt alone, but you can season them even more if you want! Try tossing them with a pinch of one of these spices before air frying them:

Dry the chickpeas with a kitchen towel

Dry chickpeas

When ready to cook, drain and rinse the chickpeas.

Then spread them out on a clean kitchen towel or paper towel and pat dry. It is very important that you dry the chickpeas before cooking. If you skip this step, they will not crisp up in the air fryer.

Meanwhile, remove any loose skins from the outside of the chickpeas.

Roasted chickpeas in the air fryer basket

Roast chickpeas

Place the chickpeas in a medium bowl. Mix with oil, salt and a pinch of desired spices.

Distribute the chickpeas evenly in your air fryer basket.

Important tip: Don’t overfill chickpeas! In order for them to become crispy, hot air must be able to reach them from all sides.

Most air fryers will easily fit a (14-ounce) can of chickpeas in a single layer. However, if you have a smaller air fryer or are cooking a larger version of this recipe, you may need to work in batches.

Air fry at 400°F for 10 to 15 minutes, turning halfway through, or until crispy. Don’t hesitate to go longer if necessary. The exact timing may vary depending on your air fryer and the moisture content of your beans.

Storage tips

Store air-fried chickpeas in a loosely covered container at room temperature for up to 2 days.

They may soften over time. To crisp them up again, cook them in a dry skillet over medium heat for a few minutes or put them back in the air fryer.
