Malayalam Film L2 Empuraan Completes 9 Days at Box Office: Breaking Records Despite Competition
The Malayalam blockbuster “L2 Empuraan,” starring superstar Mohanlal and directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, has completed nine days at the box office with impressive collections. Released on March 27, three days before “Sikander,” the film has broken multiple records since its opening day.
Record-Breaking Opening and Continued Success
“L2 Empuraan” immediately made history upon its release by setting a new record for the highest opening day collection for a Malayalam film. It surpassed the previous record holder, “Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life,” which had earned ₹7.6 crore on its opening day.
According to early estimates from Sacnilk, the film collected a robust ₹88.25 crore in its first week (8 days). On its ninth day, by 10:30 AM, it had already added another ₹3 crore to its total, bringing the overall collection to approximately ₹91.25 crore. These figures are preliminary and subject to change as final numbers are tabulated.
Impressive Performance Despite Limited Screens
What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that “L2 Empuraan” secured only about one-fourth of the screens allocated to “Sikander,” which was released three days later. Despite this significant disadvantage in screen count, “L2 Empuraan” has maintained strong momentum at the box office.
Industry experts had initially predicted that the film’s performance might suffer after the release of “Sikander,” which has itself collected around ₹94 crore. However, “L2 Empuraan” has defied these expectations, continuing to draw audiences and generate substantial revenue both domestically and in international markets.
About the Film: A High-Stakes Sequel
“L2 Empuraan” is the eagerly awaited sequel to the 2019 blockbuster “Lucifer,” which was also directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and starred Mohanlal. The film is part of a planned trilogy written by Murali Gopy, with a third installment expected to follow.
In this high-octane political thriller, Mohanlal reprises his role as the enigmatic and powerful Stephen Nedumpally/Khureshi Ab’raam, while Prithviraj Sukumaran pulls double duty as both director and actor.
Big Budget, Bigger Ambitions
With a reported production budget of approximately ₹180 crore, “L2 Empuraan” represents one of the most expensive productions in Malayalam cinema history. The film’s technical aspects have been widely praised, including its cinematography, action sequences, and production design.
The success of “L2 Empuraan” further solidifies Malayalam cinema’s growing reputation for producing high-quality, commercially viable films that appeal to audiences beyond Kerala. The industry’s focus on strong storytelling combined with technical excellence has been gaining recognition across India and internationally.
As “L2 Empuraan” continues its theatrical run, industry analysts are keeping a close watch on whether it will surpass the lifetime collections of “Lucifer” and potentially set new benchmarks for Malayalam cinema’s commercial potential.
