This is the Tiggo 7 Pro, Chery’s third model for Malaysia after the Omoda 5 and the Tiggo 8 Pro. The preview took place on March 25th – when the order books were opened – and the official launch is just around the corner. Chery is once again shocking many with its price – the Tiggo 7 Pro is priced at under RM130,000 for a single spec and is aimed squarely at the Proton X70.

Measuring 4,513mm long, 1,862mm wide and 1,696mm high, the Tiggo 7 Pro is six millimeters shorter, 31mm wider and two millimeters taller than the X70, while its 2,670mm wheelbase is identical to that of the Proton . Without the tape, the Chery looks wider than the Geely Boyue-based X70. The trunk of the T7 has a capacity of 475 liters, the maximum volume is 1,672 liters with the rear seats folded down.

The smaller Omoda 5 is a good internal reference as it is very popular these days. Compared to the B-segment SUV, the Tiggo 7 Pro is 113 mm longer, 32 mm wider and 108 mm higher – all significant margins. At the other end of the scale, the higher-end Tiggo 8 Pro with three rows of seats is 209mm longer, although there isn’t much difference in width and height (T7 is 2mm wider and 9mm shorter).

Compared to the bold and low Omoda 5, the Tiggo 7 looks more like a conventional SUV. The upright body features a raised window line and darkened D-pillars strictly “floating roof” effect. The T7 front fascia, while not as wild as the O5’s face, is quite distinctive with its large hexagonal grille and diamond rivets. The blue slats on the air inlets are quite unique.

Elsewhere you’ll also find slim LED headlights with sequential indicators, LED daytime running lights mounted low on the bumper, bold cheeks at the rear of the profile and full-length LED taillights. What do you think of the looks of the Tiggo 7 Pro compared to the exuberance of the Omoda 5 and its handsome big brother, the Tiggo 8 Pro?

Inside, the Tiggo 7 Pro follows the style of the Tiggo 8 Pro with a clean, minimalist dashboard. The heart is a widescreen display with two 12.3-inch displays for the instruments and infotainment (Chery likes to call this a 24.6-inch dual screen). Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard and, like the T8, the sound comes from an eight-speaker Sony system.

The interior also features dual-zone climate control, a 50-watt Qi wireless charger, multi-color ambient lighting, keyless entry with automatic locking, push-button start, and six-way power driver and front passenger seats. Leatherette upholstery, panoramic glass roof, 360-degree camera system and a power tailgate.

The T7 is equipped with a shiny carbon fiber dummy instead of the matt wood of the T8. This and the red brake calipers seem like unnecessary “sporty” references to an SUV that isn’t sporty to drive at all. But Malaysian car buyers are known to like anything sporty, even in entry-level premium brand cars.

Under the hood is a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 197 hp and 290 Nm of torque. Drive is transmitted to the front wheels via a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is 9.5 seconds and the top speed is 205 km/h.

Incidentally, all but one variant of the Proton X70 is equipped with a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo engine with 177 hp/255 Nm. The 1.8-liter turbo four-cylinder in the top model X70 delivers 184 hp/300 Nm.

In terms of safety, the Tiggo 7 Pro comes standard with seven airbags, stability control and driver assistance systems including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane centering assist, rear collision warning and blind spot monitoring with collision avoidance, rear cross traffic alert with automatic braking and automatic high beams .

There is no shortage of choice if you have RM120,000 to RM140,000 to spend on an SUV – Japanese, Chinese, Local, B-Segment, C, NA, Turbo, Hybrid. What do you think of the design and packaging of the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro?
