Modern love podcast: remote only

Nora Johnson had made weekly visits to an elderly man after suffering a mild stroke. But he was not just an older man. “We had the worst marriage in the history of human relationships,” Nora wrote in her 2014 Modern Love essay. “Dysfunction does not even begin to describe it.

During their visits, the memories would return: the fights, the holidays, the falling bank accounts. But Nora’s ex-husband had forgotten all about it. He had forgotten her self. And this blank sheet had offered a chance.

Today we listen to Nora’s story about reconnecting with her ex despite her painful past. Then we meet a couple from our Vow Column, Margaret Eginton Carmichael and Gregory Carmichael, who learned to date again in their sixties.

Nora Johnson died in 2017 at 84. Her obituary in The New York Times noted that her novels were “full of relationships under stress.” Her Modern Love essay from 2013, “Age is No Obstacle to Love, or Adventure,” remains one of the most read.
