SAI approves Star Wrestler Bajrang Punia’s US Training, TOPS cyclists to get T20 bikes faster

The Ministry of Sports’ Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) on Wednesday approved the 35-day training camp of Tokyo bronze medalist Bajrang Punia in the United States for the Commonwealth Games.

The Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) would fund Bajrang’s travel, boarding and daily expenses for training camp in Michigan, US from June 25 to July 30. TOPS would also cover the costs for his personal coach and physiotherapist.

The training stint in the US will help Bajrang prepare for the upcoming Birmingham Games and the World Cup.

The MOC has also approved financial assistance for the purchase of two T20 Proteam Look TT track bikes for TOPS development bikes Ronaldo Singh and David Beckhame.

The T20 bikes are new top-of-the-range track bikes that were also used by the French national team at the Tokyo Olympics.

“The bike is said to be lighter, stiffer and aerodynamically more efficient than its predecessors. The said bikes will also help the athletes prepare for the upcoming Commonwealth Games this year,” the SAI statement read.

In addition, the MOC has also approved financial assistance to the country’s table tennis player Sharath Kamal for its fees for support staff, fitness training, physiotherapy, rehab and fitness tests and nutritionist.

The MOC has also approved financial assistance for shooter Anish Bhanwala for foreign training and competition in Germany at the Shooting Sport Center, Suhl for 20 days.

Anish will train under pistol coach Ralf Schumann in Germany and prepare them for the upcoming leagues.
