A subdivision of a private hospital in Bengaluru collapsed on Tuesday, arresting four workers, one of whom was seriously injured. Part of the facade of the city’s St Martha’s Hospital – a ‘welcome arch’ – collapsed at 6.30am. Three fire trucks and a bulldozer were called to rescue the trapped workers. The police were on site to monitor and assist paramedics.

Firefighters rescued the four workers under the rubble and transported them to the hospital for treatment. A police officer told reporters one worker is in serious condition. The wounded were identified as Moididin, Chand Pasha, Rafi Sab and Basavaraj, from Raichur in northern Karnataka.

St Martha’s chief medical officer, Davy Ollakengil, told the Deccan Herald that construction of the arch began two months ago and that it would be ready in about a month. He said the hospital will bear all the expenses to treat the workers and do their best to save the critically injured man.

Some media reports have said that the badly injured worker died from his injuries.

At the time of writing, Hindustan Times could not independently verify this information.

St Martha’s press officer, Anto Deol, told reporters that hospital authorities would discuss the issue of the collapsed arch with civil engineers to determine the cause of the incident.

Other patients admitted to the hospital have been instructed to stay away from the area as repair work is underway. They were not affected by the accident, the hospital said.

There was laughter at the Uttar Pradesh meeting on Monday, when the leader of the opposition, Akhilesh Yadav, recounted an incident that took place during his stint as prime minister. The head of the Samajwadi party attacked his successor, Yogi Adityanath, who was even seen laughing uncontrollably at government over the state of education in Uttar Pradesh when he recalled the episode. The former CM acknowledged that he was also responsible. The then sitting CM, Akhilesh, sought a second consecutive term of 5 years.
