Pro-Ject Audio Systems launches Metallica Limited Edition Turntable

There is nothing but a plate of heavy metal to pump the blood. Austrian turntable manufacturer Pro-Ject Audio Systems thinks so too and it has partnered with the American metal gods to create a Metallica Limited Edition Turntable.

Designed in the wake of the Earth’s most powerful metal band, the new deck delivers spectacular images and Pro-Ject’s simply unattainable sound quality. Pro-Ject has equipped the Metallica machine with bona fide audiophile tech. From the stylus with diamonds to the (heavy) metal feet, Pro-Ject claims that this is a uncompromising collaboration.

The light is the first thing you notice about the Metallica turntable. Pro-Ject treats the surface of the deck with a mirror-finished metal contour, producing striking reflections and a shape-changing gloss that works well with the glass platter for turntables. The high mass of glass increases the overall solidity of the deck, leading to tight and accurate playback speeds. The glass finish also keeps the Pro-Ject Metallic graphics in full view as it does not include vinyl.

This new deck is designed to be easy to use, but it also offers the option to fine-tune certain settings. The turntable is pre-adjusted and equipped with Pro-Ject’s Pick the S2 C cartridge. The S-shaped tonearm has a removable SME headshell, allowing a quick change for those who like to change cartridges. Tracking power and anti-skid are both adjustable, allowing the user to make precise adjustments to tweak for perfect performance.

The high-mass glass plate looks stylish and adds extra grip to the turntable. The use of aluminum in the whole design improves tolerances during production and looks great. The sub-platter adds even more mass to the entire platter and drive system and this results in a reduction in noise and unwanted resonances.

A key recovered from the super accurate pulley and sub-platter is a marked improvement in short-term speed stability (also known as ‘wow and flutter’). Stability in any area is a crucial feature of a great-sounding vinyl system, so Pro-Ject’s Metallica turntable has height-adjustable and heavy-duty metal feet to keep it level, regardless of the surface on which it is placed. The speed of the turntable is electronically controlled via a toggle switch that moves between 33 to 45RPM. There is also a belt for playing 78 RPM records.

Prices and availability: The Pro-Ject Audio Systems Metallica Limited Edition turntable costs $ 1,599 / £ 1,149 / € 1,299.00 £ 1,149 and is available from August 2022.
