Based just outside Leeds in the north of England, bike maker Carbon Wasp has a brand new UK-made carbon truffle short ride full-suspension mountain bike. Carbon Wasp Truffle 120mm UK-made carbon MTB
Carbon Wasp owner and bike designer Adrian Smith cites the new 120mm Wasp as a ‘strong and rigid’ carbon trail bike designed to balance efficient climbs to get you up the hills and a plush ride to enjoy ‘rubbery on the return ‘.
,We wanted to make a bike that can do everything, a real “go to” bike for all track conditions. The truffle is light and predictable for climbing, agile for singletrack and robust for technical descents. We basically made the bike we want to ride, a bike that would be at home on the XC race circuit or razing around the local woods“, Smith describes.
Modern Trail Geometry
Even though the bike rides with short travel the line between XC and trail, Carbon Wasp says the truffle is built to take all kinds of tracks. Geometry-wise, they call it the Modern Trail, with longer frame range, a sleek 65.5 ° head angle, and steep 76 ° seattube (all when coupled with a matching 120mm fork.)
Plus, that “120mm of plush and progressive rearward travel” can be balanced with anything from a 120mm XC fork for less aggressive singletrack & trails, or up to a more sleek 140mm trail fork for more technical & steeper rides.
The Carbon Wasp Truffle is a 120mm handmade bicycle made entirely in Yorkshire, even up to the full carbon shock connection. It also includes a nice downtube storage opening to keep tracks low and protected within the frame.
Carbon Wasp has been making carbon components & bicycle frames for other brands from its West Yorkshire workshop for several years. But as mountain bikers themselves, Carbon Wasp really wanted to make their own perfect trail bike. The truffle has been in development for several years, and has gone through various evolutions from the appearance of things, and seems to be calling travel backwards, while retaining a progressive nature for all-round trail tasks.
,When designing the Truffle, the goal was to create a frame that could be built into a lightweight XC racing bike, but was also robust enough to accommodate the most technical descents. It’s not designed for bike park rounds, but it could handle that if you sometimes need it,
The in-house carbon formatting itself has taken 3 years to refine, in addition to balancing a reliable range of UK source prepreg fiber that Carbon Wasp builds with the truffle.
The truffle has fully sealed bearings for durability in the UK, internal cable routing, stealth 30.9mm dropper post-compatibility, a classic BSA-threaded bottom bracket, Boost 148 rear spacer, replaceable derailleur hanger, a pair of ISCG chain guide tabs, and a single bottle cage mount.
The 1800g frame (without shock on the back) includes a sturdy stick-on rubber downtube protector and chainstay protector to keep the frame safe and run smoothly over rough terrain, and has UK clearance for 29 x 2.4 ″ tires (bannen?,
