This past week I attended the 2022 Sea Otter Classic, which was a boat-load of fun, BTW. As I wandered through the event and got the scoop on all the shiny new bike bits we all love so much, I began to notice that an abundance of older, kick-ass personal bikes ran amidst all the new, expensive fancys. The bikes were all so different. Some were old mountain bikes that were redesigned, some were a bit neo-retro and a few were bikes with frames made by small boutique frame builders. I also documented some brand new bikes with great, out-of-the-norm builds. All of them are excellent in their own right … really, each of them.
Looking at each of these older bikes, I was struck with a healthy dose of nostalgia, and thought “wow, I remember that bike” or “hey, my friend had one of those”. It was fun to watch, and it felt good to look back on a simpler time in the industry.
So, I decided that if I was feeling that way when I saw them, maybe some of you too … that I was trying to document them. I really wanted to try to focus on the unique bits and parts they used on the bikes as opposed to just the bike itself.
So, here you go … enjoy these wonderful personal builds!
