Former Pakistan paceman Shoaib Akhtar was a favorite of fans wherever he went. Although he had many fierce fights with Indian cricketers in his heyday, Akhtar was encouraged by cricket fans when he played for Kolkata Knight Riders in the early years of the Indian Premier League. Akhtar was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise and he recently shared a funny anecdote of a match between KKR and Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in IPL 2008.

KKR was handballed for a small 67 and it was the star duo of Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya who came out to bat for Mumbai. Akhtar, who was the first bowler, defeated Mumbai’s favorite son Tendulkar in the very first victory and that led to some hostility from the full and biased Wankhede audience.

“It was a beautiful ground and a fantastic atmosphere. Stadium was completely packed. But I dismissed Sachin Tendulkar at first over himself and that was a big mistake. Then I got a lot of abuse when I was on a good leg. Sourav Ganguly told me, “Come to mid-wicket, these people will kill you. Who told you to fire Sachin? That too in Mumbai?”, Akhtar said in an interaction with Sportskeeda.

Sanath Jayasuriya was the star of the show for Mumbai when he hit a 17-ball 48 to lead the home team to victory in that match. Akhtar said he loves working and playing in Mumbai.

“I worked a lot in Mumbai and got a lot of love. I was happy because at Wankhede no one abused my country, no one made racist remarks. The audience at Wankhede was very passionate. I wanted to play more games there, “Akhtar said.
