Kylian Mbappe runs the show in PSG’s 5-1 victory over Lorient

Kylian Mbappe scored two goals and three assists as Paris Saint-Germain defeated Lorient 5-1 and maintained their 12-point lead over Marseille to come closer to a record 10th French league title on Sunday.

There are still eight rounds.

Mbappe delivered the spark in the final third of the fourth minute with a dribbling run and a low shot that kept goalkeeper Matthieu Dreyer away. Shortly afterwards, French striker Neymar, who opened the scoring, fed.

The lead doubled in the 28th when Mbappe scored with his signature move, destroying a curler in the far corner before boarding in close range.

When Lorient striker Terem Moffi cut the lead in the 56th minute by hitting on a sloppy back pass from Achraf Hakimi to hit the ball past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, PSG supporters loudly captivated the lack of concentration of their team.

Mbappe squandered Lorient’s hopes of a comeback by increasing his league record to 17 goals, dribbling past Julien Laporte to bury the ball in the bottom corner in the 67th.

Six minutes later, Mbappe scored the ball back for Lionel Messi, who shot under the crossbar for 4-1. Mbappe made his leading 13th assist in the league by playing in Neymar for the final goal in the 90s.

“We have to bring back that 10th league title for the fans, for the club. It’s important,” said Mbappe. “We have a chance to make history.”

PSG relied heavily on Mbappe’s brilliance this season. However, his contract expires this summer and Mbappe has not yet committed himself to a club.

“I have not made a decision yet,” Mbappe said. “I still think, because there are new factors (…) I do not want to misunderstand it. I want to make the right choice.”

Marseille consolidated second place by rally past relegation threatening Saint-Etienne 4-2 in a game full of errors.

Gabon striker Denis Bouanga gave Saint-Etienne the lead in the ninth minute by shooting past goalkeeper Pau Lopez, who made a shameful handling error.

But Saint-Etienne destroyed themselves by conceding two penalties and scoring an own goal.

Marseille’s third consecutive victory opened a three-point gap at Rennes in third place, while Saint-Etienne remained in the relegation zone, one point from safety.

The top two clubs qualify for the Champions League, while the third placed club goes on to qualify.

Strasbourg appeared as a surprising competitor in the race for European spots after Lens ran 1-0 to climb to fourth place.

Strasbourg stretched its unbeaten run to eight matches to get on points with Nice and just two points behind Rennes. The team’s best finish in the past 20 seasons was 10th in 2020.

“The ambition is to do as well as possible until the end of the season,” said Strasbourg coach Julien Stephan. “We never put pressure on ourselves. I do not see why we should put more pressure on ourselves today. We just want to have fun.”

Monaco scored a disappointing Metz 2-1 and France international Wissam Ben Yedder extended his leading goals in the league to 18.

In his French league debut, Brazilian winger Tete kept Lyon’s slim European hope alive in a 3-2 victory over Angers. Lyon blew the lead twice despite two goals from striker Moussa Dembele.

Nantes gave Clermont a fourth consecutive loss, 3-2, Brest won midway through Montpellier 2-1, and Troyes defeated Reims 1-0 in injury time to move away from the relegation zone.
