Ex-Congressman Ashok Tanwar, currently with TMC, is likely to join AAP | Latest News India

Former Congresswoman Ashok Tanwar, who attended the Trinamool Congress in November, is likely to attend the Aam Aadmi Party today in New Delhi, news agency ANI reported. The expected move of Tanwar could be a big shock for Trinamool, who tried to increase her footprint in Haryana with the help of the former Lok Sabha member.

Tanwar joined TMC after Mamata Banerjee’s party swept the West Bengal elections, crushing the ambitions of the Bharatiya Janata Party when the Saffron Party saw a major victory in the state on its backs of impressive Lok Sabha results. However, Trinamool’s dismal performance in the recent Goa general election could have forced Tanwar to rethink his move.

A once close assistant to Congressman Rahul Gandhi, Tanwar floated Apna Bharat Morcha in 2019 after a fallout with the big old party over his rivalry with Haryana leaders, including former Prime Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. Despite changing sides, the former Lok Sabha member of Sirsa remains a prominent figure in Haryana politics.

In view of the 2024 state assembly polls, Kejriwal’s party has increased in focus on expanding its footprints in Haryana, and Tanwar could well be the key to its journey.

Last week, AAP appointed new officials to strengthen its base in several states, including Haryana. Dinesh Pratap Singh was appointed co-responsible for the AAP’s political affairs in Haryana and Prabhakar Gaur as organizational secretary, a week after Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Gupta was appointed leader of the AAP’s political affairs in the state.
