California jewelry store owner pulls gun to stop robbers: ‘Nobody’s doing anything’

A California jewelry store owner who stopped robbers in their tracks with his legally owned handgun said Tuesday a crime spree continues in the area.

Maaz Jewelers owner Usman Bhatti joined Fox & Friends to discuss the thwarted attack and the recent string of smash-and-grab robberies and other crimes in the Bay Area.

“It was horrible … those incidents had started like in October, so it’s about four months ago,” Bhatti told Carley Shimkus. “And then we [have] everyone was waiting for that moment, you know, if they were going anywhere. “

He said he believes softer policies by liberal prosecutors are the reason criminals continue to strike.

“They know they’re getting away with it, and then nothing’s happened so far, and … nobody’s doing anything,” Bhatti said. “They got all the surveillance videos … they worked on it but heard nothing.”

According to the San Bruno Police Department, the incident at Tanforan Mall happened on January 21 in the middle of the afternoon.

There were apparently five suspects approaching the store and began hitting display cabinets, but Bhatti was eventually able to stop the attack after pointing to his legally owned firearm.

The gun was not fired, and no one was injured in the attempted robbery, according to police.

Bhatti said it was a matter of time before his store was hit.

“We stand outside all day and in principle the business is really slow. Business is bad. People do not come to the mall. People are scared because of COVID and because of all those incidents,” he said.
