2022 Aston Martin DBX 707 introduced; engine, performance, design and more

The new flagship variant expands the DBX’s V8 to 697hp, upgrading the chassis and bringing sporty styling.

Aston Martin has taken the wraps from the DBX 707, the new flagship model in the DBX reach. The Aston Martin DBX 707 is a significantly upgraded performance version of the standard SUV. It comes with many mechanical upgrades, making it the most powerful luxury SUV from a mainstream manufacturer, and puts it above the competition of the Lamborghini Urus, Bentley Bentayga Speed en Porsche Cayenne Turbo SE hybrid,

  • DBX 707 is powered by 707 hp, 900 Nm 4.0-liter V8 AMG engine
  • Gets various mechanical upgrades for suspension, gearbox, steering and brakes
  • DBX 707 could potentially make up 60 percent of total DBX sales

Aston Martin DBX 707: engine and mechanical upgrades

Main among the changes is a reworking of the DBXs Mercedes-AMG-powered twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine, from which Aston’s engineers have freed up an extra 157hp and 200Nm to take peak outputs to 707hp (hence the name) and 900Nm peak torque. A custom tune and the introduction of ball bearing turbochargers are among the most important tweaks.

This power drive, coupled with the use of a faster shifting and more responsive wet clutch nine-speed automatic transmission, takes the DBX 707’s 0-100kph time down from 4.5 seconds to 3.3 seconds. It, therefore, just ranks its V12 engine Aston Martin DBS grand tourer sibling which has a 0-100kph sprint time of 3.4 seconds.

In addition to superior pace, the 707 promises even greater dynamic power than the standard DBX, thanks to upgraded air suspension, a redesigned steering system, a reinforced differential with limited slip and carbon-ceramic brake discs (which account for 40.5 kg of unsprung shear weight). The chassis upgrades promise flatter turns, “tighter control” of vertical movement over bumps and reduced pitching and squatting under brakes and acceleration.

“Too often this class car is characterized by a clever obsession with brute force,” said Aston Martin engineering boss Drummond Jacoy. “With the DBX 707, our goal was to combine enormous performance with unmatched control and precision, combined with an authentic sporty character essential in every Aston Martin model.”

A custom styling package marks the 707 from the standard DBX. A larger grille with a new double mesh pattern is the most obvious differentiator, plus there are redesigned light clusters, air intakes and bumpers, black trim detailing, a new spoiler and larger quad outlets.

This “overtly sporty” design theme remains in the cabin, where Sport Plus seats are fitted as standard and all switchgear is finished in dark chrome. Customized for the 707 is a new drive mode selection panel that “provides direct fingertip control of key dynamic modes”, instead of having the driver negotiate submenus in the touchscreen.

Aston Martin DBX 707: could potentially beat Nurbürgring round record

Speaking to our sister publication Autocar UK, Aston Martin CEO Tobias Moers suggested that the DBX 707 could go to the SUV lap record at the Nurbürgring, currently held by the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT with a time of 7mins 38.9 seconds. “We need the high grip tires I think, they took a Corsa on the car. A Corsa we have not tried so far.”

“On the standard Pirelli 23in there is a pretty good grip level. We are not far from that record, but on the standard tires. So you can imagine we have an ambition. At the end of the day is it’s a tire test. “

Moers also said the DBX 707 could eventually make up 60 percent of total DBX sales. “I see the high potential in the market,” he said, citing an unnamed rival car “that has been making a lot of sales a year” and is “far too comfortable” for DBX 707 buyers.

Aston Martin in India

By the way, Aston’s most recent launch in India was also the DBX SUV, but only in standard form. Launched in January 2021, the DBX price in India was at Rs 3.82 crore (ex-showroom). The UK market’s model line-up in India also includes the DB11 and the Vantage,
