The Delhi government on Wednesday decided to reduce the VAT on petrol, which reduced the price of fuel in the city by about Rs 8 per liter. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Delhi cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday. As a result, the price of petrol in the national capital has dropped completely. The new rates would take effect from midnight onwards.

At a cabinet meeting led by Kejriwal, it was decided that the VAT on petrol would be reduced from the current 30 percent to 19.4 percent, leading to a cut of about Rs 8 per liter, officials said.

The price of petrol after the VAT cut will drop from the current Rs 103 per liter to Rs 95 per liter, sources said PTI,

The price of gasoline in Delhi was higher compared to the NCR cities in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, where the state governments had announced a VAT reduction after the center reduced the excise duties on fuel prices.

To control the rising fuel prices in the country, the Center had on the eve of Diwali, announced excise duty reduction on fuels, which resulted in a sharp decline in gasoline and diesel prices throughout the country. The government had cut the price of petrol by Rs 5 and that of diesel by Rs 10. Following this decision, several states, mostly regulated by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and allies also added the value added tax (VAT) on gasoline and diesel prices.

Meanwhile, fuel prices remained unchanged for the 27th consecutive day on December 1 after the center cut excise taxes to bring retail prices to record highs.
